WHERE DO UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS BEGIN ?
The current difficult economic and social situation in our sub-region highlights different forms of Challenges that definitely contribute to the degradation of human rights and dignity. These challenges are so melted in regular lives that they have become invisible and normal! We had this odd normalcy in the back of our minds as we planned and implemented AAA activities.
We opted to revisit the concept of Universal Human Rights to understand where it begins after all? In this process, we luckily found the answer in Eleanor Roosevelt’s remarks at the United Nations (March 27, 1953) on Where do Universal human rights begin?…“In small places, closest to home…so close and small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person: the neighborhood he/she lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, the farm, or office where he works. Such are places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination.”
African Action on AIDS is grateful and would like to express its appreciation to partners around the world who allowed us once again, to bring few human rights as close to home as possible including: Education; Potable water; Dignified toilets; Solar lamps; Prevention of AIDS, Malaria and Water borne diseases.
AAA has been able, since last year, to build a successful interaction with the village team. This has enabled us to plan activities, fix a time line, discuss and approve the process, commit both sides, reach concrete results and evaluate them.
The commitment of the main actors, including the village Chief, the Principal of the Secondary School, the Chief Nurse and the Head of the village bank (CVECA) has been a great asset. These village partners have been our technical advisors and brought us closer to the community.
The in-kind contribution of villagers as indicated in the Convention has been extremely useful (carry sand, water, house external workers). This in-kind contribution places an emphasis on CONTRIBUTION OF COMMUNITY not only on “MONETARY contribution”!
A concrete realization that development is about jumping in and doing!
All in All, there is hope. AAA continues to believe that small/ well managed efforts will generate big results. We have been inspired by the people we met this year. It changed the way we listen to news or read newspapers: Faces of children who enjoy potable water, women who suddenly give birth in a lit room, or enjoy the privacy of a clean toilet come to mind now, NOT STATISTICS! Human Rights here we come!
